Free Suicide prevention ‘Gatekeeper’ training
QPR: Question, Persuade, Refer
Suicidal ideation is 2-3x higher in the food service industry compared to other workplaces. Often times, the simple offering of hope, and social and spiritual support can avert a suicide attempt entirely.
QPR, the CPR of suicide prevention training, is an emergency mental health intervention for suicidal persons created in 1995 by Paul Quinnett. This one hour ‘GateKeeper’ training prepares you to support a friend, family member, or teammate who is contemplating suicide. Over 500K have taken this training — join over half a million people who want to help prevent suicide.
Giving Kitchen is proud to provide food service workers nationwide FREE access to the QPR Gatekeeper suicide prevention training course online. QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer - three steps anyone can learn to prevent suicide. Equip yourself and your team with the skills to help others who may be struggling with depression, mental illness, or suicidal ideation. This Gatekeeper course is always free for food service workers using the special Giving Kitchen code GKQPR.

How to get help for someone in crisis
What is a Gatekeeper?
According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), a gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide.
Gatekeepers can be anyone, but include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.
As a QPR-trained Gatekeeper you will learn to:
Recognize the warning signs of suicide
Know how to offer hope
Know how to get help and save a life
Why QPR Gatekeeper Training?
Crisis brain is real. While chronic depression and other mental illnesses can trigger suicidal ideation, a desperate situation can also send people into a mental space where suicide is suddenly on the table. Giving Kitchen’s entire team is required to complete the QPR Gatekeeper Training to help manage food service workers experiencing crisis brain. The QPR Method can help to not only save a life, but build a culture in which people are looking out for each other better than before.
